The Highlander is such a fantastic plane for a beginner. It was recommended to me by many on the Internet when I started searching for a plane in 2002. Unfortunately it seems MAD Aircraft is now out of business. There are several prospective replacements for the Highlander such as the NESail Defiant and the Mountain Toys Gentle Foamy. Most reports say that they fly well, but it doesn't have the groundswell of support among experienced contest fliers and teachers that the Highlander seems to have had.

When I was searching the net and building my Highlander I referred to the following websites constantly: Dick Williamson's Highlander modifications on the CRRC site
msinow.com/rc/highlander2. htm
and Hosenos e's Highlander page

There were always a couple of pretenders to the "Foam but thermals nicely" genre of planes. Based on many reports the Trick RC floater, no longer made, was never really a floater. ;-) And the DAW 1-26 2 meter or DAW TG3 seem to do quite nicely a slope or slermal birds but do not do as well on just flat field flying.

I really wish they still made the Highlander and I hope someone picks up the rights to this plane if the Gentle Foamy and Defiant turn out like the Trick and DAW planes.

As this page is under construction, I'll leave with a few pages of pictures of my really beat up Highlander. After two seasons of teaching this newbie how to fly, with only 2 stripped servos and dirty covering to show for it I can highly recommend an EPP foam plane for anyone starting out - whether you have an instructor or not. I had quasi-instructors, and there were several times when I did silly things that if it had been a balsa ship there would have been no way for them, on a buddy box or otherwise, to save the plane from turning into sticks. This is the best way to learn how to fly RC gliders. It bounces much better than balsa!
